Nurse burnout is extremely common. The American Nurses Association found that 62% of nurses experience burnout. The rate is even higher among younger nurses at 69%. With two-thirds of nurses experiencing burnout, what can we do?

The United States is facing a severe nurse shortage.

This crisis has left hospitals struggling to find enough nurses to meet the demands of their patients.

The issue is complex, and the solution is not straightforward. However, it is important to understand what is causing the nursing shortage, when it started, and what can be done to improve it.

Pennsylvania’s new nurse staffing, or ‘safe staffing,’ mandate went into effect on July 1, 2023—requiring a minimum number of care staff at nursing homes per shift, per resident. This is the first mandate of its kind in Pennsylvania, and it is the latest in a push to ensure patients are receiving adequate care and that nurses have sufficient staffing and resources to be successful at their job.

In January 2023, The Department of Justice U.S. Attorney’s Office of the Southern District of Florida announced Operation Nightingale, a takedown of a massive nursing diploma fraud scheme involving six Florida schools.

The operation was named after Florence Nightingale, who is widely regarded as the founder of modern nursing due to her work organizing care for wounded soldiers in the Crimean War. 

It’s National Nurses Week! Celebrated since 1954, National Nurses Week is an annual event held May 6-12. It is now part of the larger National Nurses Month, which has an area of focus each week: Self-Care, Recognition, Professional Development, and Community Engagement.

Last Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2023, The Department of Justice U.S. Attorney’s Office of the Southern District of Florida announced the takedown of a massive nursing diploma fraud scheme. 

Charges were brought against 25 individuals who were allegedly involved in the scheme to sell fraudulent nursing diplomas and transcripts from various nursing schools based in Florida.  

More than two years into a pandemic, healthcare continues to face workforce challenges. High burnout and turnover have contributed to a continued shortage, and healthcare is working to find solutions.

This week is National Nurses Week, an annual event held May 6-12. In 1954, the first National Nurses Week was celebrated to mark the 100th anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s time in Crimea. Nightingale is widely recognized as the founder of modern nursing, after managing and training nurses during the Crimean War,

The number of nurses experiencing burnout is trending up and has been since before the COVID-19 pandemic. That burnout comes with a hefty price tag. The National Taskforce for Humanity in Healthcare estimates that nursing burnout costs hospitals $9 billion every year. Disengagement and lost productivity drive frequent turnover and can result in lost reimbursement from failing to meet patient-satisfaction and quality-care outcomes.
